These men are members of the Sanhedrin and prepared to support Caiaphas’ plan. All have not only challenged Jesus face-to-face, but they have all suffered insult by him!
Saul will be invited to the meeting but be unaware of
the final objective.
* * * * * To accept this assignment, Saul must make this drastic move at the height of his fame as a Pharisee and expert in the Mosaic Law. What argument then, will persuade, even incite , Saul to accept this crude and vulgar assignment: the destruction of the Jesus People? This will be an outright mission of inflicting misery and violence on his own people! Saul’s parents, a strict Jewish couple, prayed for a son; so, when he arrived they named him “Saul,” which in Hebrew meant “asked for.” Locked within that prophetic name, were the hopes and prayers that their son would attain greatness and high esteem as a Pharisee and spiritual leader like his father. The parents were part of a unique Jewish settlement in Tarsus. In an effort to strengthen one of their key cities with stable, productive citizens, Rome offered Jewish immigrants to Tarsus free, automatic citizenship for themselves and their children. This included Saul’s parents, so when Saul was born, he automatically received this very high honor, a free citizen of Rome! The Candidate
