The bleak, awesome mountains overwhelm Saul. Looking with wonder at the magnificent, bare-rock cliffs, he whispers to himself, “How-did-Moses-do-it?” * * * * * Saul begins the ascent in the early morning hours, the most overwhelming challenge of his life. Fortunately, he does have a sturdy walking stick, formerly used on the long trek down from Damascus. His sandals, however, are not the best kind of footwear for mountain climbing. He is fasting food, but he does have a gourd of water. Weakness is offset by sheer determination to hear God’s voice, but it is a frustrating morning! Trying to find passage up the Mountain, without a guide, a map or experience in hiking, the spoiled academic finds himself going up many dead-end crevices; he finds no beaten paths to follow, and of course, there are no directional signs. By late afternoon Saul is only halfway up the mountain, and the sun is making its descent; it is getting cooler, and he is desperately tired.
