But… how will he get there?
Surely God will open the perfect door! The divine answer comes swiftly to mind! Saul will attach himself to a merchant caravan that will take him within walking distance of Sinai! Wonder of wonders, such a caravan is now approaching! A rich Arab merchant is on his way to a port on the Red Sea; his caravan brings a cargo of spices from Arabia, and it will pass by the foothills of Sinai. Saul can travel in safety with them! * * * * * Saul walks with the caravan, nevertheless, he is in a world of his own: he prays, thinks, quotes Scripture, and wonders about “how” he will reach the Gentiles. He remembers beautiful Esther, her parting words and the enlightening discussions of the Scripture they all enjoyed in Petra. He needed that time. He knows it now. He was not ready to go anywhere, but God apprehended him, settled him down, clarified the logic of the Prophets, gave him a new appreciation for other people. Now, however, he must meet God without human distraction or intervention: Sinai is that place. Walking in a caravan with seven loaded camels would not seem ideal for talking religion with anyone.
