Heart of a Psalmist - Worshipping Christ Through The Psalms
Preface
‘HEART OF A PSALMIST’ By Mike Herron
One morning in the spring of 2003 I felt the Holy Spirit encouraging me to write this manuscript com- menting on the grandest Book in the Bible. I had been meaning to do it for a number of years but that morning there was a tremendous sense of urgency so I sat down with my new computer and began to write. Seven years later and endless hours of study, prayer, worship and countless revisions, I present this to you. Through these efforts, I feel that I have grown much closer to God, the characters in the Bible and the great expositor's of the Psalms. Through these songs we are introduced to the language of the human soul that is transparent before a compassionate God. They teach us how to express our deepest feelings, highest joys and darkest thoughts before our creator who welcomes every effort to commune with him. Through the fabric of their poetry we see more clearly the imprint of Jesus Christ who reveals himself to those who endeavor to love and serve him. We are taken on a journey into the depths of King David’s heart as he navigates life under the incom- parable mercy of God. The lyrics of the songs can become the pattern and voice of our own prayers and worship. We encounter spiritual reality in these song-poems: they sing and we can listen and imitate the greatness of the people who prayed and played their way into God’s presence. Centuries later they still invite us to follow, to take up our harps and join in the joyful pursuit of God.
