Heart of a Psalmist - Worshipping Christ Through The Psalms

The priests and teachers of the law asked Jesus to stop the children’s worship because only Yah- weh-Adonai was worthy of such adoration. He quotes this psalm and clearly infers that he is the Adonai that David has declared worthy of praise. This declaration of his deity stopped all the accusers.

II CROWNED WITH GLORY - The Son of Man 3-6

“ When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers-the moon and the stars you have set in place- what are mortals that you should think of us, mere humans that you should care for us? (what is man that you should think of him, the son of man that you should care for him?) For you made (him) a (little lower than the angels) and you crowned (him) with glory and honor. You put (him) in charge of everything you made, you gave him authority over all things-“ (3-6) The psalmist continues with his night meditation and begins to think of the coming ‘Son of Man’. This was Jesus’ favorite title for himself and he delighted in becoming human in order to identify with us completely. He was the Son of Man because he was born of the Virgin Mary and the Son of God be- cause he was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit. • “ …I, the Son of Man, have authority on earth to forgive sins.”(Lk.5:24) • “ And I, the Son of Man, have come to seek and save those like him (Zacchaeus) who are lost.” (Lk. 19:10) • “ But the time is soon coming when I, the Son of Man, will be sitting at God’s right hand in the place of power. They all shouted, ‘then you claim you are the Son of God?’ And he replied, ‘You are right in saying that I am.’”(Lk. 22:69,70) The writer to the Hebrews quotes this passage of Psalm 8 directly and then adds the inspired in- terpretation: “Now when it says ‘all things,’ it means nothing is left out. But we have not yet seen all of this happen. What we do see is Jesus, who ‘for a little while was made lower than the angels’ and now is ‘crowned with glory and honor’ because he suffered death for us. Yes, by God’s grace, Jesus tasted death for everyone in all the world.”(Heb. 2:6-9) . Because of sin mankind had lost the exalted status portrayed in this psalm but Jesus restored us to an even greater glory. Because of his death and resurrection we too will be resurrected and seated at God’s right hand, higher than the angels and made in his likeness. We will be ‘like’ God but different. He is the self-existent one, we will live because of him. He is the Holy One, our holiness is derived and given by him. He is the all-powerful God, our strength and ability is a gift extended through him. ‘The Son of God became the Son of Man so we might become sons of God 3 .’ “ You put us in charge of everything you made, giving us authority over all things-the sheep and the cattle and all the wild animals, the birds in the sky, the fish in the sea, and everything that swims the ocean currents.” (6-8) The harmony between mankind and the animal kingdom was destroyed at the fall of Adam and Eve. The scriptures teach that in the future this will be restored like a paradise: “ The wolf and lamb will feed together. The lion will eat straw like the ox. Poisonous snakes will strike no more. (Isa. 65:25) Even the animals know that death is a curse and something to dread and avoid, even they await the coming of the Son of Man, the Son of God. “ All creation anticipates the day when it will join God’s children in glorious freedom from death and decay. For we know that all creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.” (Rom. 8:21,22) III IN CHARGE OF EVERYTHING - The Sovereign Over Creation- 6-8
