Heart of a Psalmist - Worshipping Christ Through The Psalms

comes from the tender heart of God and lasts forever. Two key words of the psalm are introduced ‘un- failing love’, the constant, steadfast covenantal love, and ‘faithfulness’ both appearing 7 times in the song. This is a song that touches eternity and reaches to all generations. “The Lord said, ‘I have made a solemn agreement with David, my chosen servant. I have sworn this oath to him: I will establish your descendants as kings forever; they will sit on your throne from now until eternity.’” Interlude (3, 4) Only twice in the Bible has God sworn an irrevocable oath and both times it was concerning the coming Messiah. The first oath and promise was to Abraham; “…I swear by my own self…through your seed (the Messiah) all the nations of the earth will be blessed-“ (Gen. 22:18) The second oath was prophesied through Nathan and recited in this verse: David’s physical descendants would succeed his earthly throne and the coming Messiah would be established forever as king. God is serious about his oaths as the writer to the Hebrews says: “God also bound himself with an oath, so that those who re- ceived the promise could be perfectly sure that he would never change his mind.” (Heb. 6:17) “All heaven will praise your miracles, Lord; myriads of angels will praise you for your faithfulness. For who in all of heaven can compare with the Lord? What mightiest angel is anything like the Lord? The highest angelic powers stand in awe of God. He is far more awesome than those who surround his throne. O Lord God Almighty! Where is there anyone as mighty as you, Lord? Faithfulness is your very character.” (5-8) The angels celebrate the oath and promise that Christ will reign forever on his heavenly throne. The good angels worship him while Satan and the evil angels resist his rule. • Myriads of angels- “…and I heard the singing of thousands and millions of angels around the throne…” (Rev. 4:11) • Highest Angelic Powers- This is possibly in reference to the Seraphim found in the Book of Isa- iah; “Hovering around him were mighty seraphim…In a great chorus they sang, ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty!” (Isa. 6:2, 3) • Those who surround his throne- The four living creatures in Revelation are certainly included in the angelic beings around the throne; “In the center and around the throne were four living be- ings…Day after day and night after night they keep on saying, ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty- ‘”(Rev. 4:6, 8) “You are the one who rules the oceans. When their waves rise in fearful storms, you subdue them. You are the one who crushed the great sea monster. (Rahab) You scattered your enemies with your mighty arm.” (9, 10) The ‘crushing of Rahab’ is in reference to when the Lord used the sea to defeat Pharaoh’s army. Delitzsch says; ‘from the natural sea the poet comes to the sea of the peoples;…at the Red Sea a mirac- ulous subjugation of both seas took place at one and the same time 2 .’ God controlled both nature and the army of Egyptian people to bring deliverance to the Israelites. II WHO CAN COMPARE ? 5-8 Praise from the Angels III YOU CREATED IT ALL - 9-14, Praise from Creation

“The heavens are yours, and the earth is yours; everything in the world is yours–you created it all. You created north and south. Mount Tabor and Mount Hermon praise your name.” (11, 12)

Mount Tabor represents the fruitful west side of the Jordan River and Mount Hermon points to the vast deserts to the east reminding us that all regions were created to praise the creator. We are to praise him in our ‘desert times’ as well as our ‘fruitful seasons’. “Powerful is your arm! Strong is your hand! Your right hand is lifted high in glorious strength. Your throne is founded on two strong pillars–righteousness and justice. Unfailing love and truth walk before you as attendants.” (13, 14)
