Heart of a Psalmist - Worshipping Christ Through The Psalms
The second and more preferable sign says: “ THE WAY OF THE RIGHTEOUS- Welcome! This path leads to innumerable blessings, days and nights of total delight in God, roots that go deep into the river of life, fruitfulness in every season of life, prosperity, continual guidance from the Almighty and an eter- nal place among the assembly of righteous persons in heaven.”
The choice to ‘delight in the law of God’ is obvious!
PSALM 2: YOU ARE MY SON The Messiah, The King, The Son
This is one of the most quoted psalms in the New Testament as it introduces Jesus as God’s Mes- siah, God’s King and his beloved Son. While Psalm 1 deals with our personal relationship to God, Psalm 2 is international in scope addressing the destiny of nations based on their acceptance or rejection of Jesus. Psalm 1 celebrates the LAW while Psalm 2 introduces us to PROPHECY. These are the two foundational pillars of the Old Testament and both are pointing to the coming Messiah. The psalm does not identify its author yet the New Testament attributes it to King David. “ …you spoke long ago by the Holy Spirit through our ancestor King David, your servant, saying, ‘ Why did the nations rage?…” (Acts 4:25) David is telling the events of his life but he is ultimately prophesying of Christ. It presents Christ in three prophetic sections:
1. GOD’S MESSIAH - v. 1-3 2. GOD’S KING - v. 4-6 3. GOD’S SON - v. 7-12
I – GOD’S MESSIAH - 1-3
“ Why do the nations rage? Why do the people waste their time with futile plans? The kings of the earth prepare for battle; the rulers plot together against the lord and against his anointed one [Messiah]. ‘Let us break their chains,’ they cry, ‘and free ourselves from this slavery. ’” (1-3) ‘Messiah’ is the Hebrew word meaning ‘anointed one’ and Jesus’ appearance in history fulfilled this hope of Israel. “ The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother, Simon, and tell him, ‘ We have found the Messiah’ (which means the Christ).”(Jn. 1:41) In the Book of Acts, the leaders of the Jewish nation told Peter and John to never again preach in the name of Jesus. The believers in Jerusalem gathered together and prayed the 1st two verses of this psalm most likely by singing. They saw their situation as a fulfillment of the prophecy of this psalm: “ Then all the believers were united as they lifted their voices in prayer:…’the rulers gathered together against the Lord and against his Messiah.’ … That is what has happened here in this city! For Herod An- tipas, Pontius Pilate the governor, the Gentiles, and the people of Israel were all united against Jesus, your holy servant, whom you anointed (messiah!). ” (Acts 4:24,26,27) God answered the prayer that he had prepared for them centuries before and the scriptures say: “ After this prayer, the building where they were meeting shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. And they preached God’s message with boldness. ” (Acts 4:31) As they sang and prayed this psalm they received empowerment for healing, generosity, boldness and miracles! The same results are available to us today when we pray the pow- erful words of King David.
II GOD’S KING - 4-6
“ But the one who rules in heaven laughs. The Lord scoffs at them. Then in anger he rebukes them, terrifying them with his fierce fury.”(4,5)
