Heart of a Psalmist - Worshipping Christ Through The Psalms
• Their own wickedness will destroy them: “ The wicked draw their swords and string their bows to kill the poor and the oppressed, to slaughter those who do right. But they will be stabbed through the heart with their own swords, and their bows will be broken.” (14,15)
The Spiritual and Financial Security of the Godly- 16-26
The ‘inner life’ must address our attitudes towards God’s provision and the use of our finances. The godly person differs greatly from the wicked. These teachings of David became the foundation for Solomon’s incredible wealth and the inspiration for his brilliant proverbs concerning finances.
1. The godly are content with what they have- “ It is better to be godly and have little than to be evil and possess much.”(16) Paul teaches us “…true religion with contentment is great wealth.” (1 Tim. 6:6)
2. The Lord takes care of the godly. “ For the strength of the wicked will be shattered, but the Lord takes care of the godly. (17) The wicked person faces disaster while the godly can anticipate a good fu- ture. 3. The godly have peace every day- “ Day by day the Lord takes care of the innocent…” (18), Jesus taught in his Sermon on the Mount: “ So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own wor- ries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.” (Mt. 6:34) 4. The godly have eternal treasure and rewards- “ …and they will receive a reward that lasts forever.” (18) Jesus further teaches in his Sermon on the Mount: “ don’t store up treasures here on earth…store your treasures in heaven…”(Mt. 6:19,20)
5. The godly will make it through tough financial times. “ They will survive through hard times; even in famine they will have more than enough.”(19)
6. The godly flourish while the wicked will perish- “ but the wicked will perish. The Lord’s enemies are like flowers in a field- they will disappear like smoke.”(20)
7. The godly are generous givers- “ The wicked borrow and never repay, but the godly are gener- ous givers.” (21) Solomon echoes his fathers teaching in the proverbs: “Whoever gives to the poor will lack nothing.” (Pr. 28:27)
8. The godly inherit the land- “ Those blessed by the Lord will inherit the land, but those cursed by him will die.”
9. The godly are directed and sustained by the Lord! “ The steps of the godly are directed by the lord. He delights in every detail of their lives. Though they stumble, they will not fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand.” (23,24) 10. The godly are never forsaken- “ Once I was young, and now I am old. Yet I have never seen the godly forsaken, nor seen their children begging for bread.” (25) Jesus taught: “Y our heavenly Father al- ready knows all your needs, and he will give you all you need from day to day if you live for him and make the Kingdom of God your primary concern.”(Mt. 6:32,33) 11. The godly give generous loans to others- “ The godly always give generous loans to others…” (26) Jesus instructed us to be generous in his Sermon on the Mount; “ Give your gifts in secret, and your Father, who knows all secrets, will reward you.” (Mt. 6:4)
12. The godly have blessed children! “and their children are a blessing.” (26)
