leading to the incident with Bathsheba. From adultery, which was forbidden by Hebrew law, the web of sin enlarged itself to include further deceit and the planned murder of a faithful soldier. David’s transgression is a classic example of the growth of sin in a person’s life (2 Samuel 15:1 -18:18; James 1:13-15). Today, God is calling many to the front lines of battle. This battle, however, is not a battle against flesh and blood, but a battle against principalities and powers of wickedness in heavenly places (Eph.6:12). What will you do when God calls your name? How will you respond to God’s invitation to join His army? Will you respond negatively like David did, which resulted in sin and disgrace? Or will you respond in faith and be part of the greatest army on heaven and earth? Let us all respond like the prophet Isaiah did in Isaiah 6:8: “Here I am Lord, send me.”
2. To rule/reign over the people
The two key words here are rule and reign :
The word rule means: controlling power, exercising
government and authority. 1
The word reign is similar yet has a little different meaning. It is defined as follows: The possession or exercise of supreme power, especially royal power, sovereignty, dominion. 2 The king, as we can clearly see by these definitions, has quite an influential place in the lives of his subjects.
3. To judge the people
Being a judge over people was quite a responsibility, requiring great wisdom and integrity. As we look to the book of Judges, we can gain new insights into the nature of Yahweh’s rule and Israel’s obligations to Yahweh.
