God And His Word - A Question And Answer Approach To Understanding The Bible

LESSON 6: THE MOSAIC COVENANT (MOSES AND THE LAW) INTRODUCTION: The story of Moses is long and exciting. The covenant which God made with Moses on Mt. Sinai is what we refer to as the Mosaic Covenant. Actually, Moses received three things on the mountain: The Ten Commandments (or the Moral Law), the Levitical Laws, and the Blueprint of the tabernacle. This study will cover only the Ten Commandments. l. WHAT ARE THE TEN COMMANDMENTS? The Ten Commandments are the basis of the Moral Law of God. Exodus 20:3-17. The Lord gave the Ten Commandments, but He did not say which the First, the Second, is etc. Not all churches use the same order in numbering the Commandments. 2. HOW DID GOD GIVE THE LAW? Originally, God wrote the Law into the heart of man. For Israel, God arranged the Law in Ten Commandments - written on two tables of stone - and proclaimed it through Moses. Exodus 20; Romans 2:14, 15. 3. THE FIRST TABLE OF THE LAW HAD TO DO WITH OUR DUTY TO GOD It may be summarized by Matthew 22:37, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind." 4. THE SECOND TABLE OF THE LAW HAD TO DO WITH OUR DUTY TO MAN It may be summarized by Matthew 22:39, "Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself." 5. WHAT IS THE SUMMARY OF ALL THE COMMANDMENTS? Love is the summary of all the commandments. "Love is the fulfilling of the Law." Romans 13: 10. 6. TO WHOM DOES GOD REFER WHEN HE SAYS "THOU SHALT" IN THE TEN COMMANDMENTS? "Thou shalt" is God's direct command to me and all other human beings.
