dies, so the New Covenant or will went into effect when Christ the maker died. Hebrews 9:16, 17. 7. WHY DOES GOD MAKE COVENANTS? God makes covenants with man to illustrate two important points:
[1] God's Word is absolutely reliable. [2] Man's word is absolutely unreliable.
Read: Numbers 23:19; Isaiah 14:24; 40:5; 45:23; 2 Samuel 15:29; Malachi 3:6; 2 Corinthians 7:10; Romans 11:29; Titus 1:2; James 1:17; Hebrews 6:13-18. 8. WHAT PURPOSE IS FULFILLED WHEN WE KNOW MAN'S UNRELIABILITY? When a person really understands man's failure and God's success, he can rightly appreciate that [1] God's grace HAS SAVED him, and [2] God's grace at work IS SAVING him, and [3] God's grace ultimately WILL FINISH salvation in him. Hebrews 4:16, Ephesians 2:8, 9. 9. WHAT ARE THE SEVEN MAJOR COVENANTS OF THE BIBLE? [1] The Edenic Covenant - Adam before sin. [2] The Adamic Covenant - Adam after sin. [3] The Noahic Covenant - Noah and the rainbow. [4] The Abrahamic Covenant - Abraham and circumcision. [5] The Mosaic Covenant - Moses and the Law. [6] The Davidic Covenant - David and his Throne. [7] THE NEW COVENANT OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST. NOTE: This part of the catechism will deal with just the first six covenants. The entire remaining parts and lessons will be an elaboration of the NEW COVENANT, which is our inheritance today.
