The principle of sowing and reaping is explained. IT IS SIGNIFICANT that the TWO thoughts of worship and joy that are associated with the Old Testament tithe are emphasized (9:7 and 11 to 13). 13. WHAT SHOULD OUR ATTITUDE TOWARD MONEY BE? Our prosperity should not cause us to be lukewarm, but rather, we should prosper materially as we prosper spiritually - so that we can handle the increase in a Godly way! 3 John 2. But gain is not Godliness! 1 Timothy 6:9 and 10 give us a key thought and a tremendous warning. Every person seeking to be delivered from evil should certainly be cutting off this root first! 14. DOES THE NEW TESTAMENT TEACH TITHING? Tithing is mentioned in seven verses of the New Testament. The first two occurrences give the striking statement of Jesus Himself: "Yes, you should tithe, but you shouldn't leave the more important things undone." Matthew 23:23; Luke 11:42 (Living Gospels Translation). In addition to Jesus' statement, we also have the apostolic teaching in Hebrews 7:5-10. Here we find that the "Order of Melchisedec" involves giving tithes to God Himself in spontaneous worship, rather than as a legal obligation to a dying order of earthly priests. Hebrews 7 shows that tithing under the Law was merely the legal, outward manifestation of a higher principle - the faith that sprung joyfully from the heart of "Father Abraham" 237
