God And His Word - A Question And Answer Approach To Understanding The Bible
LESSON 8: THE DAVIDIC COVENANT (DAVID AND THE ETERNAL THRONE) 1. WHY IS DAVID CONSIDERED TO BE IMPORTANT? David is one of the most prominent figures in the history of the world; a mountain peak among Bible characters. He is the most famous ancestor of Christ. Jesus is not called the Son of Abraham, or the Son of Jacob, but the Son of David; as, Matthew 21:9. 2. WHAT WAS THE CHIEF CHARACTERISTIC OF DAVID? Many things could be said of David; he was a fine athlete, a courageous warrior, a military genius, a shrewd politician, an outstanding musician, etc. David's chief characteristic, however, was that "He was a man after God's own heart." 1 Samuel 13: 14. This means that he had a sensitive soul that hungered to do God's will. He was a worshipper. 3. WHAT IS THE MAIN THOUGHT OF THE DAVIDIC COVENANT? God promised David that his house would have an eternal throne and dominion. 4. DID THIS COVENANT JUST INVOLVE DAVID'S NATURAL DESCENDANTS? The Davidic Covenant referred to the natural descendants, but made provision for a spiritual fulfillment through Christ when the natural throne fell into sin. 5. WHERE DO WE FIND THE RECORD OF THE DAVIDIC COVENANT? 2 Samuel 7; 1 Chronicles 17; also, there are references made to the Davidic Covenant in the book of Psalms. 6. LISTED BELOW ARE THE SEVEN MAIN THOUGHTS OF THE DAVIDIC COVENANT. As New Testament references are used along with the Old, it becomes quite apparent that God actually intended for the Davidic Covenant to find its fulfillment in the Lord Jesus Christ and the Church. A. "I WILL MAKE THEE A GREAT NAME." 2 Samuel 7:9; 1 Chronicles 17:8; note the many Scripture references in your concordance on "David"; also, Christ's Name - Hebrews 1:3; Matthew 1:21; Acts 2:36; 3:6, 16.
