God And His Word - A Question And Answer Approach To Understanding The Bible
29. WHICH NON-JEWS WERE CONVERTED AND ADDED TO THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH IN BIBLE DAYS, WERE THEY OBLIGATED TO KEEP THE SEVENTH DAY AS A SABBATH? The early (Jewish) Apostles settled the matter once and for all in the first epistle written to the Gentiles (Acts 15:23-29). Only FOUR things were required. Note that circumcision, Sabbath-keeping, abstinence from meats, etc., were NOT listed! 30. DOES GOD REQUIRE THAT CHRISTIANS OBSERVE THE SABBATH (SATURDAY) AND OTHER HOLY DAYS OF THE OLD TESTAMENT? He does not; for in the New Testament, the Sabbath and other holy days were abolished by God Himself. Matthew 12:8; Colossians 2:16, 17. 31. DID GOD COMMAND US CHRISTIANS TO OBSERVE ANY DAY? God did not command us to observe any day. Romans 14:5, 6; Galatians 4:10, 11. 32. WHY THEN DO WE OBSERVE SUNDAY AND OTHER CHRISTIAN DAYS? We observe Sunday and other church festivals in order to have time and opportunity for public worship. Hebrews 10:25; Acts 2:42; 1 Corinthians 11:20, 33; 14:19, 23, 26, 28, 33, 34. The early Christians observed the first day of the week (Sunday). Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 16:2. The first day of the week, of course, was known as the day of Christ’s resurrection from the dead. 33. WHEN DO WE SIN AGAINST THE FOURTH COMMANDMENT? Today’s Christian sins against the Fourth Commandment when he does not allow each day to be dedicated to the will of God. Also, if he does not utilize the days set aside for public worship in the local church, he robs himself of the worship, the sacraments and the Word of God that he MUST have. Hebrews 13:17; Galatians 6:6, 7; 1 Thessalonians 2:13.
