Working the Clay L ike Jeremiah, we all need to visit the potter’s house. 1 The deft hands working the moist clay have a vital message for all of us. As the glob of clay on the wheel begins to turn, the skillful potter fingers the clay and shapes it into some vessel of utility and beau- ty. Similarly, we are shaped by the fingers and tools of God. Seeking to know God’s will, we are like unformed clay on the revolving wheel of preparation. It is prayer, however, that is the tool of the great potter which molds us into vessels of honor. Mark well this law of the king- dom: The Holy Spirit uses prayer to work and shape our lives. In this chapter I would like to suggest how prayer shaped the life and ministry of Jesus and how this same process will work in our lives. It would seem impertinent to pre- sume the full details of the development of our Lord’s experience of prayer; however, the carefully recorded
