In the early morning while in solitary prayer, Jesus revived the heavenly manna which nourished the multi- tudes. Undoubtedly, the principles of the Sermon on the Mount resulted from an “ear opening” experience of prayer. “The Lord’s Prayer” was birthed and refined in the actual performance of prayer. By the revelation that came through prayer Jesus understood His disciples and discerned the strategy of the devil. Every public figure who seeks a following understands the importance of advertising and publicity. However, in contrast, Isaiah 42:2 declares that the Messiah “will not cry out or raise His voice, nor make His voice heard in the street….” 15 Jesus “warned the people not to make Him known;” that is, He would not publicize Himself or run a popularity campaign. Rather, He waited each day for God’s directives and was obedient to the Father’s will. Prayer made His principle real. In the early days of my pastorate in San Jose, California, a prophecy was given to me: if I would be faithful in min- istering to other churches, the Lord would increase my flock. With my training in sales, and my determination to reach people even if I had to knock on doors, I doubted the prophecy, but it has proven to be true. For no matter how I tried to increase our number, my exhaustive efforts were fruitless until I became obedient in helping the other ministries.
