Awaken The Dawn
AWAKEN THE DAWN!
cup? Suddenly:
Now an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him (Luke 22:43, NAS ).
an angel appears. Jesus must have experienced a great surge of emotional confidence as He realized the Father’s concern for Him; furthermore, it is quite possible Jesus was also energized by the angel. On another momentous occasion, after He had fasted forty days in the wilderness and had been subjected to Satan’s temptations, Jesus had heavenly visitors. Physically exhausted in the wilderness, having used His remaining reservoir of strength to over- come the last temptation, Jesus was “ministered to” by angels. The Third Prayer: Sweat Like Gouts of Blood It was after the angel’s appearance that the final segment of prayer took place. Only Luke describes the intense scene:
And being in an agony He prayed more earnestly: and His sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground (22:44, KJV ).
The question about Jesus actually sweating blood while he prayed has often been raised, and truthfully, we don’t know for sure. Both the linguistic problem of the text as well as the medical verification of such phenomenon are open to equivocation. But it is really unnecessary to believe that he sweat blood to understand Luke’s objec- tive in his Gospel.
