sincere prayer, your vocation will sharply come into focus. Through prayer, Jesus realized who He was. He wit- nessed how certain Scriptures described Him, as in the four “Servant Songs of Isaiah.” Prayer sharpened His sense of direction: when or where He should go––such as the time He traveled through Samaria where He deliv- ered the single greatest statement ever spoken on the sub- ject of worship:

…believe me, the hour cometh, when neither in this mountain, nor yet in Jerusalem, worship the Father. Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship; for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true wor- shippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth. 9

In prayer, Jesus perfected a sense of authority which nei- ther a seminary nor a rabbinical school imparted to Him. Learned theologians extricate passages from the Scriptures and say, “Now, this is an interesting thought about this text…” Not Jesus! He spoke from the context of His own life-experience. His messages came from God like a daily paper hot off the press. He spoke and explained with an eloquence born from the grace and the protection and the fellowship of God. Often, Jesus pref- aced his remarks with “Amen,” sometimes repeating it for emphasis. He would refer to an item in the law, and then infuriate the rabbis with His own take on the subject: 101
